Art Smart ~ Lazy Summer Dayz

{Emmett's House ~ by Cornflower Press}

Check out the etsy shop of Cornflower Press. They take reclaimed lumber, make little house shapes out of wood, then paints all four sides and prints each one with a different original image from one of their hand-carved linoleum blocks.

They remind me of lazy summer days, and would look great hanging in a kitchen or on a shelf ~ the also can stand on their own! Really fun and unique art.

Design Tip of the Week (5.17.10): Be on the list

One of the best ways to get inspiration is to be on the right list. And may we suggest two.

1. Etsy...if you read P4D regularly, you know we LOVE Etsy. Well you may not know that they send a daily email that profiles different vendors and their goods based around a theme. These collections give us some great inspiration for the Blog as well as our homes. As an example, here is a sample of the items sent yesterday in their "Going Coastal" email that profiled some awesome beachy items.

True Blue Tables from Turqoiseshed

Sea Tree from Jrurig

Pillows from Plumcushion

So head over to Etsy and sign yourself up!

2. BHG - Another one you must be on list for. Better Homes and Gardens sends out great ideas daily, has lots of pics, and are organized by room and style.

Friday Finds (5.14.10): Anchors Away

Love this circular nautical rug! In a study with rich chestnut wood furniture or in a bedroom with white furniture...this rug would just look fab-U-lous. From Rosenberry Rooms, the Classic Compass Rug comes in square, rectangle and circle cuts. Love IT, want it, and it may even help me know what direction I'm facing. So multi-functional.

Art Smart (5.13.10): Welcome Summer

Summer is coming! There are a lot of weather friendly pieces of art that you can use to decorate your outdoor living areas. Like this weatherproof print from Geneva Style. Beaumont - Palms Paradise III feels like you are laying under a palm tree.
In a recent attempt to think through a picture collage, I wanted to re-share P4D's post on ways to approach collages from last summer.

Do you have an empty wall, some pictures stuffed away in a box, and some time? Create a PICTURE COLLAGE! Its fun, its creative, and it gives your house guests something to stop and gander at. TIP: Hallways are a great place for picture collages; they usually need some love and nobody really spends much time there.

There are some tips for creating a tasteful collage, but generally, you really can be as creative as you want to be. Mainly, think outside the box and don't get weighed down by precision.

*Pick one thing that will be your unifying element. For example, you may want to use the same color matting or the same type of frame but in various sizes.

*If you have a hint of OCD lurking inside you, you may want to measure the distance between your frames. Two inches is a good rule of thumb for tighter collages without losing complete wall view.

*VERY IMPORTANT- think through your hanging pattern and lay it out on the floor BEFORE you start putting holes in the wall.

*Find your center and work off that picture. You will need a visual anchor, so start from the center and build around it.

*Use a level if you are doing uniform, parallel rows of pictures.

*A fun alternative to pictures are postcards.

Dandy Chandy Tuesday!

While this chandy is available through Rosenberry Rooms, a children's store, it is far from child's play! Love the clean lines of the chic Elise Pendant. This chandy would be great to finish off that art deco look you have been working on or in a black and white color scheme.

Design Tip of the Week (5.9.10): Mixing patterns

Using multiple patterns in a room can really make your space unique and show you know a thing or two about decorating. Unfortunately, if not done correctly, overusing and mismatching patterns can leave your room looking "unique", and not in a good way. Here are some tips and inspiration to help you mix your patterns successfully!

1. Mix a small to medium sized pattern with a larger one.
2. Keep to the same color palette so the room doesn't become too busy. A monotone color scheme really helps if you are going bold with your pattern choices.
3. Try not to mix more than three different patterns (otherwise it can just be too much!).

This room uses three patterns very nicely, including a small floral and gingham pattern, and a larger stripe pattern in the pillows. A complementary color scheme ties it all together.

{Image from Real Simple}

Two patterns are used here, a medium sized floral pattern with a bold stripe curtain. Love the orange, red and baby blue color combo!

{Image from BHG}

This room goes bold with several patterns in their throw pillows, keeping with the same colors makes this work well.

{Image from Decorology}

Be fearless, pick two bold patterns to cover your walls and your floor. This is adventurous, but done nicely. The monotone color palette helps to tone the patterns down tremendously. Whites and soft colors also make this room work as well.

Dandy Chandy Tuesday!

So it wasn't as much the look of this chandy that drew me to it, while it is awesome (love the balls hanging from it) and reminiscent of last weeks chandy pic, but no, it was THE PRICE. The Bellora Chandelier is from Pottery Barn and it is less than $300! A good price as chandys go, a great price for the size, and a very good deal for Pottery Barn!
