Design Tip of the Week (4.27.09): A Backyard Getaway

Whether you are a city dweller or just not offered the luxury of a big backyard, don't despair! Small spaces, little grass, and sometimes no natural shade from trees can sometimes make it hard to create a comfortable outdoor space. Here are some tips and items that will help you turn a "small" backyard into a cozy outdoor oasis:

*Don't overcrowd your outdoor area with patio furniture. Opt for a more compact table or two comfy chairs with a side table. A high bar table like the one below is a great idea for opening up your space while saving it.

*Create shade to make your space cooler and more comfortable. No trees? No problem! Sail shades (modeled after the sails of a sailboat) provide relief from the sun and are available in many different colors and patterns. Backyard city has some fun sail shades, but if you poke around you can also find recycled sails from sail boats.

*Don't rule out the luxuries available to the owners of large outdoor spaces. If you don't have room for a fancy outdoor fireplace, go mini! Smith & Hawken has a small copper fire pit perfect for your cozy outside getaway.
