Design Tip of the Week (8.3.09): Curtain Call

Before we get started...THIS WEEK IS OUR ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF PRIMED4DESIGN!!! We are rolling out some fun new features and services you guys will love!!! Thank-you for all of your support and readership, and stay tuned! On to curtains:

Curtains can truly transform a room and don't underestimate their impact when planning out what types of curtains and how you want to hang them. They are a fast and easy way to give a room a new look or some life. They are also a nice way to add elegance and height in your room.

A good rule of thumb if you are hanging your average curtain (no special affects), mount your curtain rod about 4" from the top of the window.

*Here are Some fun ways to hang curtains*

-Frame a window that has shutters or blinds. So you may not need curtains on windows that already have coverage, but they are a nice decorative element in a room.

-Drape a curtain for a dramatic effect. While it doesn't provide much function, it really steps a room up a notch. A good place to drape curtains are around French doors, a bay window, or a series of full length windows (as seen below).

-Use curtains to divide a room. If you have a large open space curtains can provide definition to a space within the room, add privacy to an area, or help to create more rooms where there are none. Studio apartments are a great place to utilize curtains as dividers in order to section off a sleeping area.

-Frame the shape of the window while accenting the shape of the room. Hanging curtains in a room with a peaked roof can look rich and elegant if the curtains run parallel with the ceiling slant. You can do this look with or without a window!

Art Smart ~ Arts and Crafts

What used to be considered a hobby for your grandmother and her pals (along with knitting and crocheting), another vintage hobby is getting a new hip make over....NEEDLEPOINT!

Hang some on your walls! Whether you want to frame a needlepoint you have done yourself with pride in your eyes OR you just buy one (no one will tell) and save yourself some time, needlepoint art can be quite trendy if you pick the right pattern and complement with a cool frame.

Here are some vintage needlepoint from Etsy

And birds in a vintage frame.

Don't want to hang your needlepoint? Then you should just lay on it! There are tons of pillows out there right now that you can purchase with updated needlepoint patterns that will add a fresh look to your home. Johnathan Adler has some pretty fun ones to choose from.

Design Tip of the Week (4.13.09): Princess, Posh & Pink Baby Nurseries

Some of our readers shared pics of their little princesses' nurseries. Each one has its own unique but chic look. Thanks for the inspiration ladies!

Our April Decorator of the Month, Laura, created a beautiful nursery for her little girl. Catherine's nursery is rich and luxurious. Dark wood furniture, a pink and brown color scheme, and of course a chande make this room a room fit for the up and coming diva. Catherine has many monogram touches that really make this room hers.

Nichole's Capitol Hill nursery is being prepared for her little girl as we speak. Her beautiful handmade window treatments (sewn by the grandma to be!) are going to be the focal point of this nursery. The contrasting patterns are such a great touch. Nichole selected beautiful white nursery furniture and is on her way to creating an Alice in Wonderland theme. We cant wait to see it! Notice the white tin ceiling and the exposed brick wall, which are very common in Washington, DC row houses. This little Washingtonian will be ready to run for a seat in Congress.

Mina's baby Ema has a whimsical nursery. The pink stripes Mina and her mother-in-law handpainted are all the pop you need in this room. Mina's all white furniture and white accessories let the pink stripes shine while creating a clean and classic look to the room.
