Happy Holidays!

There is one place you should put on your list of places to travel to if you celebrate Christmas (or even if you do not!) ~ Germany around Christmas time. I (Jen) lived outside of Frankfurt, Germany as a kid and can tell you:

It. Is. Magical.

Enjoy these photos from ullarose's flickr stream of Christmas time in Munich.

We will be back on January 4th, 2010 to blogging, the gym, and a brand new year filled with possibilities!!!

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Dandy Chandy Tuesday ~ Everyday Objects Chandy's

Good morning! Hope all of you in the DC area stayed home and enjoyed the snow as much as possible!

P4D reader Laura of Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Northern Virginia sent us an email saying she thought we would enjoy this fun slideshow of chandy's made out of everyday objects from CasaSugar. She was right, we love it! Thanks Laura! My personal fav is the photo above featuring beautiful glass tea cups incorporated into a chandy.

Check out Laura and her husband Patrick's blog here featuring great tips about outdoor lighting.

Design Tip of the Week (12.21.09): Find Your Inner Artist

DIY is our design tip of the week!

These handprint canvases are a great family tribute. Perfect for a kid's room or for the family room - have everyone in your family do one (even the pets). Create your own unique family tree! Stick with two colors or go for the rainbow. If you want to get this project started fast, there are handprint kits available like the one above from from Pearhead.

Go black and white for dramatic effect! This chic silhouette shared with us by P4D reader Michelle from DC. Inspired by Picasso's owl painting, Michelle took a large canvas, painted it black and painted a white silhouette of an owl. In her all white bedroom, this painting just pops.

A VERY easy DIY art project is just simply painting a canvas one color. Contrast is key because the color is the art in this project. Pick a color that will be the focal point of your room. Selecting a color that is not represented heavily in the room of choice is a great strategy for impact. An orange monochromatic painting is used in this BHG's photostream.

Easy Fix Friday ~ How To Use Driftwood

Good Morning! We continue to answer our P4D reader's contest entries ~ where we asked you to leave a comment with an idea for a future P4D post (from this book giveaway contest last month).

Joy asked us where she could find some usable driftwood: "I'm looking for usable driftwood! Something large enough to go over a queen bed and has some structural integrity! Love your site - keep getting great ideas!"

Driftwood is not the easiest thing to find..unless it's on the beach! :) What I did find is artwork that uses driftwood at BoundlessGallery.com that will be just beautiful to hang over a bed.

Here is a driftwood sculpture in elenamary's 1000markets shop made with driftwood, shells, abalone, sea glass and pearls.

Another way to bring in the natural wood feel is driftwood lamps:

Here is a very elegant driftwood (resin base) lamp from Horchow.

And here is a more rustic driftwood lamp (but still elegant) from Living Comforts.

Primed4Design{er} of the Month ~ Total Makeover!

This month's Primed4Design{er}is Kelly James, our Canadian who shares her love of all things pretty with P4D. Check out her home makeover...it is just AMAZING! Take is away Kelly!

You know that saying about how the cobbler walks around with holes in his shoes?? Well, I feel just like that cobbler — because even though I’m a total interior decorating fanatic and love helping other people make their rooms beautiful, my house is in a constant state of upheaval with more half-finished projects than I can count!! Just to name a few… loft, dining room, kitchen, laundry room, basement… not to mention that we’ve been railing-less for over a year. A big exposed gaping hole in the floor is NOT a good thing. Plus it must break about 7 building codes. So shhhhhh, don’t tell!! ;-) In the midst of the mess, we do have a few finished rooms that I’d like to share with you.

The living room is the first room in our house to be 100% done. We did the majority of the work and shopping ourselves, but we did have some input from a designer (a friend at the time) who offered to help.

Hubby and I designed and installed the wainscoting, and I painted it. UGH. NOT a fun job!! We recovered the bench with a cool zebra chenille. The frames photos are from our trip to Luxembourg & Belgium in 2006.

The next room to be done was the guest bedroom. It went from this:

To this:

This was a total budget decorating job with almost everything in the room coming from somewhere else in the house or from standard box stores. The inspiration for the color scheme came from the two throw cushions on the bed. From that starting point, I decided on the purple & grey color scheme. The purple wallpaper that I loved (Darcy from Graham & Brown) was a perfect match to the purple cushions. I already had the furniture – it’s just cheap stuff, but I glammed it up a bit by replacing the brushed metal knobs with glass knobs from Lee Valley. A small investment for big impact!! That’s really what this room is about – creating big style on a small budget.

Our master bedroom went from bold orange with absolutely NO style whatsoever…

…to soothing grey…

I love the wall color – manta Grey by Debbie Travis. It makes my eyes happy. Hubby and I designed and built the bed (OK, I designed it, he built it!!). The painting above the bed is by Canadian artist Jennifer Kingsfield.

Our guest bathroom was just a mini-makeover. We have to keep the pink tiles, it’s just too much work to tear them out and they’re in excellent condition. To downplay the pink, I painted the walls ICI Purple Granite. And we removed the sliding shower doors and replaced them with a curtain.

Before:

After (ignore the wrinkly shower curtain!!):

And the ensuite went from this:

To this:

My favorite part of the ensuite is the vanity -- mainly because we were able to get rid of the icky dark green marble countertop with molded sinks. Yuck!! I painted the vanity (Farrow & Ball Mahognay left over from another rproject), and the new countertop is Silver Birch (Corian). I love the funky waterfall faucets. They were a total steal on Ebay -- $30 each!!

And finally, my latest makeover – my home office. It was the previous home owner’s gun room. Seriously!! It went from icky hospital green with orangey wood trim….

…to shades of grey with white trim and a letter mural on the walls…

It’s a small room, but it was a big project!! We replaced the parquet floor with laminate, designed and installed a drop ceiling (made to look like a coffered ceiling), and I painted all the letters on the two walls by hand. I recently wrote a post about my office makeover on the blog I share with my friend Victoria, DesignTies. If you’d like to see more, head over to our blog and check it out.

So that’s a little peek into my home. It’s been a work in progress since we moved in back in 2001. And there are still a lot of things to do!! But at least we’ve finished a few rooms!

Kelly

Interior DecBROrator ~ The Best Kept Secret of the Urban Bachelor

Today our guest Interior DecBROrator is our dear friend Bruckner, he's got some VERY helpful tips to make your house a home:

This month we turn our focus to the urban man. Think late 20’s to early 30’s, sometimes single or newly dating, more often in a relationship with a great girl he just isn’t quite ready to live with round the clock, so he’s still living on his own and taking steps to shed his frat boy past for a more sophisticated and clean environs. As he starts to move on from his carefree days (and backwards ball caps) where can he turn for advice on how to make his house a home? Some guys might turn to their mom or their sister, but this particular urban man has a well kept secret weapon: his gay best friend.

The past 10 years have seen consciousness evolve, minds open up and stigmas disappear. For the modern urban man the gay best friend isn’t just the guy he pretends to be in a relationship with to avoid getting mauled by a Cougar in a dark bar, he’s the guy that doles out advice about everything from how to deal with relationships, grooming, and of course, decorating.

So as a special holiday gift, my best friend has agreed to let me share a few tips with all you Primed4Designer’s out there who find yourself in a similar set of circumstances, with just one caveat…competition for the gay/straight best friend dynamic is fierce…so find your own or be content to keep working with mom and sis!

1. A well placed rug adds warmth and says something about you. Most modern living spaces are all about hardwood and glass or concrete and glass. Sure, a careful selection of contrasting paint colors will do wonders to add some warmth, but I like to use area rugs to add more warmth and create special boundaries in what can sometimes be wide-open spaces. My favorite spot for a rug – the kitchen. Just be sure to keep it clean!

2. Thread count, thread count, and thread count. Sure, those jersey sheets mom gave you 10 years ago are soft, and it can sometimes be hard to justify spending a lot on your sheets but I’m here to tell you once you make the switch, you’ll never go back. Think 800 thread count or higher, and the more you wash them the softer they get. Paired with the right down comforter and duvet and she’ll never want to leave your bed, consequently neither will you. Remember to think about the colors here, sheets should be a slight contrast to whatever duvet you have on top on them. These are an investment you’ll be able to keep for years. The website Overstock sometimes has great discounts-be sure to read customer reviews, they have great info.

3. A picture is worth a thousand words. It’s time to take the prints out of the shoebox under the bed and show off your amateur photography skills. I recently discovered the subtle power of taking some wall space and some black and white photos of you and your friends and family and making it a focal point in your home. It shows off your sensitive side and serves as a conversation piece for dates, parties, etc. Choose a few of your favorite prints and have them enlarged to different sizes, find some similar frames and you’re off.

These are just a handful of ways to help make your house a home and impress your girl, or your guests. Don’t forget to shower your gay best friend with appreciation for all of his helpful tips!

Design Tip of the Week (12.7.09) ~ A Tall Order

Inspired by P4D reader Caitlin who asked us to help her in her search for an affordable "hutch" that can replace a broom closet and provide a lot of storage in a small space, we decided to explore the options of small space storage.

If you live in an apartment or don't have a lot of room to work with in your house, tall and thin furniture is your friend. They take up less room and maximize the height of a wall that tends to not get utilized. These storage options can make up for a lack of dining room, kitchen or bathroom storage. Depending on what you want to store, here are some good space saving options in various design styles to maximize your space and match your look.

Some good storage options for things you would want to display (wine glasses, dishes, books, etc.)

Liatorp from Ikea

Target's Celtic Baker's Rack.

Green Curio Cabinet from Pier1 Imports

Storage options with doors to hide away some of the unsightly clutter!

Hampton Bay Cabinet from Home Decorators Collection

Fieldcrest Armoire from Target

French Country Cabinet from Home Decorators Collection available through Amazon)

Cadet Cabinet from CB2

If you have a little more space to work with....
Brady 2-Piece Closed Entry System from Pottery Barn
