Design Tip of the Week (11.9.09): Tweens & Teens Rooms
There comes a time in every kid's life that they want their room to reflect their personalities. So how can a parent help their child have a space they enjoy and that can grow with them as they do? Here are some tips if you are helping your tween or teen express themselves through their room's decor.
1. Purchase major pieces of furniture that can grow with them. What does this mean? get a bed and pieces like a dresser that are mature enough to be options for your child of 12 and your teenager of 17. Basic pieces, wood finishes, with no age appropriate frills are a good way to go when selecting these pieces.
2. Use paint to help your child express themselves. Paint can be changed, so let your child pick their wall colors. It will give them ownership of the room as well as help them express themselves creatively. Give them a paint brush and put them to work! Its a fun bonding experience and will make them feel like they were part of the end product.
3. Use accents as the means of bringing character and individualism into the room. Accents are fun, less expensive than major pieces of furniture, and can be changed as your kid outgrows the room's look. Area rugs, curtains, room accessories, and bedding are perfect for bringing color and character to the room. This is where your color, pattern, and theme can really shine through. And since those things need to be replaced after wear and tear anyway, it just makes sense to invest in these age appropriate accessories.
This Pottery Barn Kids room is a good example of how to keep the furniture basic and add the character of the room through the details.
The paint, rug, bedding, lamp, pillows are what make this room look the way it does and it can easily change to look like this room as seen in Delias just a few years later.

Art Smart ~ Magical Mural
My partner in design & co-blogger Jen just finished this really fun mural last week for Owen, a 2 year old who was moving to his new "big boy room." His parents wanted a mural on the wall so he would be in love with his new room (and so his old room can go to his new sibling on the way.)
Owen loves everything about cars and trucks of all kinds ~ this is what Jen came up with:

Design Tip of the Week (4.13.09): Princess, Posh & Pink Baby Nurseries
Some of our readers shared pics of their little princesses' nurseries. Each one has its own unique but chic look. Thanks for the inspiration ladies!
Our April Decorator of the Month, Laura, created a beautiful nursery for her little girl. Catherine's nursery is rich and luxurious. Dark wood furniture, a pink and brown color scheme, and of course a chande make this room a room fit for the up and coming diva. Catherine has many monogram touches that really make this room hers.
Nichole's Capitol Hill nursery is being prepared for her little girl as we speak. Her beautiful handmade window treatments (sewn by the grandma to be!) are going to be the focal point of this nursery. The contrasting patterns are such a great touch. Nichole selected beautiful white nursery furniture and is on her way to creating an Alice in Wonderland theme. We cant wait to see it! Notice the white tin ceiling and the exposed brick wall, which are very common in Washington, DC row houses. This little Washingtonian will be ready to run for a seat in Congress.
Mina's baby Ema has a whimsical nursery. The pink stripes Mina and her mother-in-law handpainted are all the pop you need in this room. Mina's all white furniture and white accessories let the pink stripes shine while creating a clean and classic look to the room.

APRIL Primed4Design{er} of the Month ~ Classic Style Served with a Twist
Laura, of Charlotte, North Carolina loves interior design. She is a regular P4D reader and was kind enough to share pictures of her home with all of us. She has a classic and clean style with a personal and fun twist that really reflects her family’s style and needs. Living in Charlotte, she has integrated some warm North Carolina touches like the palm tree accents seen in many of the rooms.
Laura’s house has some incredibly high ceilings with a lot of intricate and layered molding. She really brought this out in her bedroom where she painted both the walls and ceiling in a cool, grey-blue and used white high gloss paint on the molding to make the molding really pop. A four poster bed and a striking chandelier also contribute to showcasing the rooms best attribute by making your eyes naturally look up to appreciate the high, detailed ceiling. Black furniture, black and white photography, and silver accents give this room a sophisticated look but still inviting enough to take a nap.
The large windows in the front rooms of the house posed a challenge to Laura when deciding how to hang curtains. In one of the guest bedrooms she hung curtains on short rods on each side of the window to frame it while showcasing the window itself. The striped curtains play well into the room, giving it a cozy feel.
The nursery really fits into the look of the rest of the house. The furniture style, the muted pink walls, the mural, and the chocolate brown accents create a chic but classic baby’s room that will be stylish enough to grow with their daughter. Laura used a ragged paint effect to warm up their large living area. This technique has the look of crushed velvet as you use a bunched up rag to create a layering effect. To learn how to get Laura’s look please check out next Wednesday's DIY posting on painting techniques.
Her small guest bathrooms also have their own unique charm.
Laura recently updated their kitchen cabinets by glazing them. Using a faux technique, they applied glaze like paint over the regular wood painted cabinets and then rubbed it off to give it a worn or weathered look. It’s a very affordable way to update old cabinets without having to spend a fortune replacing them. Laura spent a total of $2500 to have theirs done whereas replacing them would have been over $15,000. P4D loves a good bargain tip! To finish the look they also updated the hardware.
Notice the beadboard that lines the kitchen as well as the organizing feature that gives the kitchen a functional style.

Design Tip of the Week (9.22.08): How to Create a Mural when your NOT Michelangelo

*Use acrylic paints versus oil paints. They are easier to work with, dry faster and are water soluble.
*Purchase high quality synthetic fiber brushes - at least one wide flat brush for the bigger areas and a round brush for details.
*Not great at painting freehand? Use an overhead projector. Simply copy an image you like to a transparency sheet, which can be easily don at kinkos, and find yourself an overhead projector. Place the transparency on the projector and fill in the image like a coloring book.
*For those scared of muraling all together, use wall decals. See our posting "Stickers for Grown Ups" from August 19th.
*For large walls, opt for wallpaper murals. Here are some great wallpaper options you can get from Murals Your Way.

While neither Chrys nor Jen have little kiddies running around just yet, they are aunties to wonderful & fashionable little baby butts. :)
It got us thinking about kids stuff, and just because something is for a kids room, doesn't mean it has to have teddy bears all over it! You can have a kids room that is stylish, & here is how:
