Friday Finds: Pretty Storage

We SO have a "thing" for the furnishings of Brocade Home. These storage boxes that look like old hat boxes are a great way to store items you want hidden. I would put my socks in there since they take up too much drawer space! ;)

Art Smart~Fancy Smancy Switchplates

Try saying that 3 times fast! "FancySmancySwitchplates":) Check out the etsy shop of The Inspired Phoenix here - very fun switchplates! I think this is a wonderfully inexpensive way to give your home some sparkle. My fave is the Red Victorian Chair switchplate (shown above), but she has many other fantastic switchplates to chose from. They are like mini art pieces that would be great in a kitchen, kids room, or studio - basically any room that needs some love!

DIY Tips & Tricks: Fun with Silhouettes

We like the word budget. We like the word friendly. We love the word art. So when we saw this slideshow from Better Home & Gardens called "Budget Friendly Art" we said "Yes." My favorite project is the silhouette art - they are always beautiful, and will never go out of style.

Dandy Chande Tuesday~Outside Inside

Having a mini freak out this morning (in a good way!). I saw a really really expensive European version of this type of pendant chandelier a few years ago - really really wanted it, but could not afford it.

While indeed everyone seems to register or shop at Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, etc. and it can be hard to find really unique home decor at those stores - this is one of those finds you can say "Oh yeah, I totally ordered it from a high end design store in Sweden." ;) Shh, we won't tell! It is also on sale!!! I'm getting my credit card out!

Design Tip of the Week (2.23.09): Storing Your Shoes!

To display or not to display? That is the eternal question when you have fabulous shoes, but lets be honest, they aren't all fabulous....Here are some creative ways to hide, save space and/or showcase girl's best friend.

A dual purpose bench at the end of the bed or in an entrance hall provides both function and style.

Display your shoes by using a simple bookshelf as your storage unit.

Orgainze your closet using clear shoe boxes. This keeps your shoes safe, you find them easily, and the stacking is less of a hassle. No more shoe boxes with broken lids!

FEBRUARY Primed4Design{er} of the Month ~ Renting and re-inventing

There is one thing that can really stifle the creativity of someone's inner interior decorator and that is RENTING. Whether its building restrictions like no painting or the imminent threat of losing your deposit for excessive holes in your walls, renters really seem to have live within the confines of their rented space. Or do they?

Lets think about the obvious, renting usually means this living situation is not permenant so the rationale is why invest in it fully. But the designer of this month was selected because with her personal style and love for antiques managed to create a living space she loves filled with tons of personality while still living within the confines of her lease agreement. Enjoy her unique furnishings as all of her guests do when visiting her home.

The front entrance really sets the tone for the house. A bench and coat rack with a shelf holding glass apothecary jars filled with silver glitter and a nice cabinet with an old stain glass window hanging above.

In the living area, Kristine has an old safe as her coffee table. One that she noted will be with her for life and weighs a ton.

An old iron press, that still works, acts as a TV stand.

She adorns her windows with old shutters to add warmth and draw your eye to the natural light.

Her bedroom has a four poster bed, a mantle she installed holding a collection of candle sticks, a nightside table with antique alarm clocks and a cozy reading corner.

Her kitchen, like for most renters, is the hardest to work around. You usually have to just settle for what you have. Kristine really worked with her kitchen and brought in some really fun eye catchers like a 1950's style table and fun knick knacks.

Other unique finds in Kristine's apartment....
An old ceiling tile

And finally the outdoor refuge- A screened in living area with comfy outdoor furniture with throw pillows and colorful hanging plants.

These may be the most original chandeliers we have profiled. These inventive designs are all made from recycled materials. Here are a few of our favorites, but you should check out all of them!

A chandelier made out of coffee stirrers and it looks like glass.

This one made out of ballpoint pens and it comes off at first as a simple black and white pattern.

This colorful chandelier is made of used party poppers from the millennial celebration in London.

Design Tip of the Week (2.2.09): Low-Budget Decorating, High-Style Looks

Good morning everyone! We wanted to let you know about the great weekend the Primed 4 Design Team had. We donated a charity basket for Team Breast Buds Pink Tie Affair in Maryland on Saturday night. The event was so much fun, and our basket of goodies and a One Room Decorating Consultation went for a great price for charity. Here are some of the items we donated, if you are interested in purchasing. This online store is a beginning of items we would like to design & sell.

Also, for the Design Tip of the Week, I found some smart shopping tips and money-saving ideas from Design on a Dime's Kahi Lee here @ HGTV's website. These are words P4D lives by!
